Truthfully, it was awesome bashing our puny 2 player heads against the players8 difficulty for the exp and loot.
It allowed for multiplayer games without being online (what? archaic - I know) but the beauty of this was I could play with my friends AND set the player command to whatever I wanted.
Way back in the day, besides online (Bnet) and offline versions, there was a LAN (TCP/IP) option. I know I may get some flak for this, but I want to state my thoughts.
